Biodance: The Collagen Mask Everyone's Talking About, Honestly Reviewed

Why Biodance is on our shelf

If you've spent any time on TikTok in the last two years, you've probably seen it: someone peeling a clear, jelly-like mask off their face in the morning. That's Biodance, and it's one of the biggest mask trends of the moment.

We're usually wary of trends. "Viral" isn't a reason to stock something. So we tried it the way we try everything, on real skin, side by side with the other hydrogel masks we know well.

The honest verdict? It isn't magic, and it isn't the only good hydrogel mask out there. But it does what it says, the formulas are well thought out, and our customers kept asking for it. A mask that's both popular and genuinely good is one we can't leave out.

Who Biodance are

Biodance was founded in Seoul in 2021 by Mihwa Kim. While recovering from facial burns, she saw first-hand how hydrocolloid dressings help skin heal. That led to a simple question: why not use the same idea in everyday skincare?

The answer was the Bio-Collagen Real Deep Mask, which has since become one of the most talked-about masks in Korean skincare. Biodance reports more than 250 million hydrogel masks sold in 90+ countries, and the brand is now expanding through retailers across Europe.

Its philosophy is about recovery and long-term skin health rather than quick fixes, something we recognise in our own approach, even if the results are immediately visible.

What is a collagen mask, and how does it work?

Collagen is the protein that gives skin its structure, the scaffolding that keeps it firm and bouncy. From our mid-twenties, the skin makes a little less of it every year. Hence the appeal of a "collagen mask": skin is losing collagen, so put some back.

It's a lovely idea. It's just not quite how skin works.

The size problem. As a rule of thumb, only molecules smaller than about 500 daltons pass through the skin's outer layer in any meaningful amount. Whole collagen is around 300,000 daltons – roughly 600 times too big. So collagen on your skin doesn't become collagen in your skin.

What it does instead. Collagen, especially hydrolysed collagen, broken into smaller fragments, is an excellent humectant. It holds water at the surface and forms a light film that keeps it there. Skin looks plumper, feels smoother and fine lines soften, because they're filled with water.

Where Biodance is a bit different. The Pink mask uses collagen broken down to 243 daltons, under that 500 threshold, so it can reach the upper layers of the skin. Some research suggests small collagen fragments may also act as signals that nudge skin to make more of its own. That evidence is promising but early, so we'd treat it as a bonus rather than the reason to buy.

So why is it good for your skin? Well-hydrated skin works better. A stronger, wetter outer layer is more comfortable, less reactive and better at keeping irritants out, and the probiotics, ceramides and niacinamide across the Biodance range support that barrier directly. It won't rebuild collagen, but it will give skin what it needs to look and feel its best.

Why it made the cut

Popularity got Biodance onto our radar. These are the reasons it stayed.

  • The format works. Around 34g of serum is set into a hydrogel that stays put for 20 minutes or all night. You can see when it's done: the mask turns clear.

  • The formulas are specific. Named ingredients at stated amounts: 243 Da collagen, 20,000 ppm niacinamide, 10% sea kelp; rather than vague promises.

  • It's gentle. Every Real Deep Mask we stock is hypoallergenic and made without 19 harsh or controversial ingredients.

  • The range is easy to navigate. Five colours, five jobs. You pick by what your skin needs that day.

It sits alongside other hydrogel masks we rate from brands such as Della Born and Seoul Face. Biodance is a great option, not the only one.

The results: what to realistically expect

Straight away: skin looks plumper, smoother and more dewy, and feels comfortable rather than tight. This is the hydration effect and it's real, it's why the mask is so popular before an event.

The next day: if you sleep in it, skin still looks rested and bouncy in the morning. In our experience, it's most noticeable with the Pink and Blue masks.

Over weeks: used once or twice a week, a consistently well-hydrated barrier means calmer, more even-looking skin. That's the cumulative benefit, not new collagen.

Biodance's own user study on the Pink mask reports 100% saw improved pores and less redness, 95% felt moisturised and 90% saw brighter skin. These are self-reported, brand-run results, so read them as "people liked it", not as lab proof.

Collagen mask myths

Myth: "A collagen mask adds collagen to your skin." It doesn't. Collagen is far too large to get through. It hydrates the surface brilliantly, which makes skin look firmer, but it doesn't replace the collagen you lose with age. If building collagen is your goal, retinoids and daily SPF have much stronger evidence.

Myth: "The mask turns clear because everything has gone deep into the skin." Partly. The mask clears as it loses water and releases serum into the upper layers of the skin. It's a good sign the mask has done its work, not proof of deep penetration.

Myth: "The results are permanent." The instant plumpness is water, so it fades over a day or two. Regular use keeps skin in better condition, which is where the lasting benefit comes from.

Myth: "Longer is always better, so sleep in every mask." Only with hydrogels designed for it, like Biodance. A cotton sheet mask left on until it dries can start pulling moisture back out of your skin. Follow the time on the pack.

Myth: "Collagen masks are only for older skin." Anyone with dry, dehydrated or tired-looking skin will notice the difference. Hydration has no age limit.

The Sonagi verdict: a trend that actually delivers, as long as you know what it's delivering. Brilliant hydration, a calmer barrier and a visible glow. Not a facelift in a packet.

Chosen for a reason.

FAQ

Which Biodance mask should I buy first?

The Pink Bio-Collagen Real Deep Mask. It's the brand's original, suits most skin types and shows what a hydrogel can do.

Can I sleep in a Biodance mask?

Yes. Apply it 10–15 minutes before bed so it sets, then peel it off in the morning and pat in the leftover essence. No rinsing needed.

Why does the mask turn transparent?

The serum is set into the hydrogel. As your skin absorbs it, the mask clears – a visible sign the ingredients have gone where they should.

Are Biodance masks vegan?

Not all of them. The Purple mask contains salmon-derived PDRN and caviar. Check each ingredient list, or browse our Vegan edit.

Is Biodance good for sensitive skin?

The Real Deep Masks are hypoallergenic and free from 19 harsh ingredients. The Blue mask is the gentlest choice; patch-test first if your skin reacts easily.
